How to Get Started as a Photographer (or Any Creative Field)
Start 2025 diving into your passion.
After my recent post ”Traveling and Working with Your Camera: Dream or Reality?”, one question has been popping up in my inbox more than ever: How do you get started as a photographer? While there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, there are a few things I did—and would recommend to anyone—to kickstart your creative journey. These steps aren’t just for photographers but can help anyone dreaming of a creative career. Let’s dive in!
1. Dream Big and Visualize the Life You Want
Close your eyes and visualize the life you want: Where are you living? What kind of work are you doing? Who are you working with? This big-picture thinking is the first step toward clarity. Allow yourself to dream without limits.
I am a firm believer that you can achieve anything you put your mind to, and for me, Journaling has been a game-changer this year. It has helped me gain clarity on my goals, intentions, and the direction I want to take my work.
2. Break Down Your Goals into Actionable Steps
From that big picture, start thinking about the specifics. What would you need to do to live that life? What kind of work would you have to create? Who would you collaborate with? What skills do you need to learn or improve?
Start dividing your goals into smaller, achievable actions. Then ask yourself: What can I do today to get closer to those big goals?
For example, if you dream of being a fashion photographer, you might:
Study current trends and successful photographers in the field.
Collaborate with aspiring models, HMUAs, or brands to build your portfolio.
Share your work consistently on social media to attract clients and connect with others in the industry.
3. Immerse Yourself in Learning
Once you’ve defined what you want to do, dive deep into the topic. Research everything. If you’re a photographer, start by exploring niches that excite you. Look at Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube to find others doing what you aspire to do. Pay attention to their work: Who are they creating with? What types of projects or brands are they working with? Take notes, get inspired, and don’t hesitate to ask questions.
Creative fields thrive on connection and collaboration, so reach out to people you admire. You’ll be surprised how many are willing to share advice. Community over competition, always.
4. Find a Mentor
A mentor can make a huge difference when you’re just starting out. They can help you figure out your next steps, give feedback on your work, and share tips from their own experience. Mentors also help you stay focused and motivated, especially when things get tough.
Most importantly, they can connect you with opportunities and people that might be out of reach on your own. It’s like having a guide who’s been down the road you’re about to take.
(P.S. I’m excited to share that I’ll be offering mentorships starting this January! If you’d like help building your portfolio, reaching out to clients, or just getting started, comment on this post or email me at florenciaolssonc@gmail.com)
5. Be Patient and Keep Going
Growth takes time, and it’s rarely linear. Learn, experiment, and allow yourself to make mistakes. The most important thing is to start. Remember: Done is better than perfect. The more you create, the more you’ll refine your skills and find your voice.
Getting started in any creative field can feel overwhelming, but it’s also the most exciting part. Dream big, stay curious, and surround yourself with a community that lifts you up. I’m rooting for you, and I can’t wait to see where your journey takes you!
